ERMSAR 2008 (September 2008, Nesseber, Bulgaria)

The third European Review Meeting on Severe Accident Research (ERMSAR 2008) was held on 23rd – 25th September 2008 in Nesseber, Bulgaria. ERMSAR 2008 was hosted by the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy, Bulgarian Academy of Science. The meeting found large interest among the specialists in Severe Accident, with strong paticipation and lively discussions on the main topics.
The presentations and full papers can be found on this page.

COORDINATED BY IRSN, THE SARNET NETWORK IS A PROJECT BELONGING TO THE 6TH EUROPEAN COMMISSION R&D FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME. THE KEY OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE:

  • IMPROVING KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF CORE MELTDOWN REACTOR ACCIDENTS AND THEREBY IMPROVING REACTOR SAFETY,
  • CO-ORDINATING AND OPTIMISING RESEARCH RESOURCES AND EXPERTISE AVAILABLE IN EUROPE,
  • PRESERVING DATA BANKS AND DIFFUSING KNOWLEDGE.
FOUR KEY ACTIVITIES

Analysing requirements and developing European research programmes

- Defining research priorities,
- Support new programmes.

Developing tools and methods to assess safety and improve accident management procedures

- The ASTEC integral code is aimed at simulating the behaviour of European nuclear power plants during a postulated severe accident with core meltdown up to the release and behaviour of fission products in the containment. This reference software for safety studies enables the capitalisation of the acquired knowledge in the form of mathematical models.
- Reference methods used for Level 2 probabilistic safety assessments,
- DATANET experimental databases and internet communication tools.

Reviewing and summarising knowledge in three key fields

- Core degradation up to meltdown and the progression of molten materials,
- Thermomechanical stress on the reactor containment and the resistance of this containment,
- Release and transport of radioactive products emitted during the accident.

Finality
Developing knowledge and tools to
improve reactor safety while providing
a framework for European research
.

Transmission of knowledge

- Supporting the mobility of students and young researchers,
- Implementing education and training courses,
- Writing reference documents,
- Organising international conferences.
